Vestergaard Elephants

Why are the ELEPHANTS® called elephants?

Over the years, many have asked us: Why are Vestergaard’s deicers called ELEPHANTS®? What’s the story behind the name – and who came up with it?

Surprisingly, it wasn’t Godtfred Vestergaard or any Vestergaard employee who coined the name. Back in the 1980s, a customer we were working with remarked that our deicers reminded him of an elephant. And when you think about it, he was right.

The long boom that sprays deicing fluid resemble an elephant’s trunk spraying water, and the body of the truck has the sturdy, powerful look of an elephant’s body.

We couldn’t help but agree – the resemblance was undeniable. From that day on, our deicers have proudly carried the name ELEPHANT®, now a registered trademark. In fact, within the aviation industry, many consider an ELEPHANT® to be synonymous with a deicer.

Of course, technology has evolved over time. The distinctive “antennas” that once drew associations to an elephant’s tusks have now been replaced by new, advanced components in our latest deicers — but ELEPHANT® remains a name that continues to stand for quality, reliability, and innovation in aircraft deicing.
